How to stop internet explorer from running in the background?

Even after closing internet explorer, the windows task manager will still indicate it running as a process. So even while it is closed, it will occasionally open up pop-up ads and slow down my computer. I want to not have it running at all in any way shape or form unless I choose to open it (which i likely wont since firefox is the superior browser). I am considering just removing it entirely from my computer if i cant find a good solution.
